For decades, he’s been the ultimate silent architect behind some of hip-hop’s biggest moments—now the streets are putting respect on his name. This isn’t just another day-one story. John’s roots run deep: he was promoting parties at 13, booking major concerts by 15, and planting seeds that would eventually shape the entire culture. In 1991, he met a 14-year-old Kanye West at a house party, and the two became production partners under the name Numbskullz. By 1998, John and his cousin Don C founded Hustle Period, managing the Go-Getters—the Chicago rap group featuring Ye, GLC, and Aerostar. From there, John took his talents to Violator as VP, working alongside Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, and Mobb Deep—absorbing every lesson he’d later pour into Kanye’s solo rollout for *College Dropout*, *Late Registration*, and *Graduation*. That man is the one and only, John Monopoly. What's crazy about John's story, he started in the music industry at 13 years old in 1989, promoting parties, and by 15, he was booking major concerts. In 1992, he threw a sold out show at AC Club with Beatnuts, who was signed to Chris Lighty, that planted a seed that night. Around that same time in 91, John met a young 14-year-old Kanye West at a house party. They became production partners, making beats together under the name Numbskullz. Then in 1998, John and his cousin, Don C, founded Hustle Period, managing the Go-Getters, which was a Chicago rap group featuring Kanye West, GLC, and Aerostar. That Chris Lighty seed would end up growing, and John would take a VP position at Violator, working with Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott, Mobb Deep. John took everything he learned as an exec and took that all to Kanye West when building his solo career. Kanye was a visionary. John was an architect behind the scenes for the rollouts of College Dropout, late registration, and graduation. What makes John's legacy so unique is he brought Don C to Kanye and Virgil to Kanye, intentionally. John told Ye that his cousin, Don, has an eye for fashion and culture and would take him to the next level. Virgil actually started out by being an intern for John, and when Kanye West was tired of all the graphic designers that the label was showing him, he had Virgil hop in. One manager from Chicago named John Monopoly really gave us Kanye West, Virgil Abloh, and Don C. Legendary. Like, I don't think we would've got this iconic photo if it wasn't for John Monopoly. I'm going to jump right in because I feel like I wouldn't be myself if I didn't address something that's on my mind. So when we first did this documentary, I was supposed to get a production credit. And so that's why I put the documentary together the way that I did. I gave them a lot of talent. That's why if you go and read my book, you basically see almost everybody that I talked about in the book. I was able to get on a documentary aside a few of the other people that they had at the end. But I was the one that put that thing together. I was promised a production credit. And the production credit said that even if the documentary was sold, I would be grandfathered into the deal because I helped produce that whole documentary.
